Chapter 12
The sun vanished quicker from the horizon as October was coming to an end. Long gone were the summer days when light freely roamed Greece until nearly nine oâ clock. Now, it was not even seven and Moira watched as the last orange rays hid behind the wild domed hills to the West. There was a knock on her door.
âMoira?â Stellaâs voice was heard as she pushed open the door halfway. She waited for Moira to speak, before popping her head inside. âYou hungry, dear? With Thalia coming and going, we kind of forgot about dinner. Evagoras is going to order form a kebab house for the four of us. We are getting their variety boxes. A little bit of everything. Do you want something specific? Anything you donât eat?â
âWhatever you bring is fine by me.â
Stella nodded and her mouth opened as if she wanted to say something, but she did not. She closed the door behind her, and Moira heard her footsteps echo from the staircase.
The doorbell that was heard forty minutes later was Moiraâs signal to head downstairs. Her only goal was to not come into any sort of confrontation with her aunt. At least, not in front of Evagoras and Stella. They had to think that she was still in the race, or her plan would surely fail.
The large dining room filled up on the rich aroma of freshly well-cooked meat as Evagoras placed the packets of goods in the middle of the table, between the pitcher of water and the vase featuring flowers cut from the garden that evening by Stella.
The party of four ate mostly in silence but their body language was deafening. Tension and worry arose from the married couple who gazed upon Moira as a threat to their future as upper-class rich folk. Moira kept her eyes focused on her meal as her thoughts were driving her crazy. She scratched her arm awkwardly nearly after every other bite. Thalia on the other hand, had her gaze all over the place. She devoured her meal with her eyes traveling from one relative to the next. She seemed in high spirits. Her color had returned to her high-bone cheeks and she had fixed up her hair.
Wishes for a good night were exchanged on the way up after Stella and Moira had taken the dirty dishes back to the kitchen. Thalia had told them not to bother with the washing up as her cleaning lady would be in, in the morning.
âThat bitch better not cost us our future!â
âShh, Evagoras!â his wife said in a whispery manner, quickly closing the door behind her and locking it out of worry.
âWe are so close! So, freaking close, Stella!â
âExactly why you need to calm down. If Thalia hears you and judges you the wrong way, we are out. This house freaks me out a bit. I feel like⦠never mind. Itâs just nerves and being away from home.â
âLike what?â
âLike we are not alone. Like back at our apartment when you know others are around.
